Arts and Crafts Hall Chair, with Minton tile to back.
** SOLD **
Victorian Arts and Crafts Walnut Hall Chair, the carved pierced back set with a large Minton tile of Guy Mannering designed by John Moyr Smith, with turned front legs.
Based on the Waverly novels by Sir Walter Scott, these John Moyr Smith designed tiles were introduced at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. The tile features Guy Mannering from chapter 54 of the book: "Meg Merrilees began, as if to confound any listening ear, to growl, to mutter, and to sing aloud ... While this dialogue went forward, Bertram and Dinmont had both gained the interior of the cave, The only light which illuminated its rugged and sable precincts was a quantity of wood burnt to charcoal in an iron grate. On these red embers Hatteraick from time to time threw a handful of twigs or splintered wood."
